Thomas has been a fixture round the Club for several years, adding his good humour to everyone around him.
Thomas, like many of us, is a diabetic. He has suffered from sores that won't heal, limited mobility, and most recently, the onset of blindness.
He hasn't been able to get to the Club on a regular basis, but thanks to our social work staff, he was visited in his home during a horribly warm spell in July, 2011. He hadn't been out of his room in days. His windows had been painted shut by his landlord, and Thomas was suffering from heat prostration and dehydration. He was days away from death.
Thomas was brought to our aging but air-conditioned centre, offered a cool shower and a change of clothes, and was nursed into recovery.
Meanwhile, one of our student interns prevailed upon the local Canadian Tire store owner for a deeply discounted room-size air-conditioner, and installed it in Thomas' room.
Thomas still faces many challenges, but now he does so knowing that he is not alone: he is one of our good neighbours.
