Ed has been described as a charmer, a character, and a "rogue." And all of these epithets were offered in admiration.
Ed has been around The Good Neighbours' Club for several years, one of the most faitful volunteers in our kitchen. Every single weekday, as if it were a paying job, Ed rolled out of bed to be at the Club to work. He always had a smile for everyone, and could usually be heard crooning a Sinatra tune, and complimenting all and sundry.
But Ed has left us. After three years of generating undocumented income, and the resulting stay in prison, inspired by the ethos of The Good Neighbours' Club, Ed has vowed to "go legit." Invited by a friend to join his tile-laying business in Calgary, Ed left a couple of months ago for the city of cowboys, and we wondered if we would ever hear from him again.
Ed called the other day, to say that he was alive and well and working his tail off, and couldn't be happier.
Since membership in The Good Neighbours' Club is restricted to gentlemen over the age of 50, and most of our members suffer from poor mental or physical health due to the stress of uncertain living conditions, few of them are genuinely employable. Ed is one of the lucky ones.
Our loss is Calgary's gain. Ed, we wish you well, but please stay in touch--we miss your smile!
